John Vink

I am very interested in the work of John Vink as he does not have 1 go to style of photography and way he shoots a subject but instead he alters the style in which he shoots down to what works with the subject at the time.

This goes from Vivian Maier style self-portraits in the field of photojournalism to more subtle pictures like Thomas Leuthard. The reason why Vink attracts me so much is due to the fact that my own style will change down to the subject matter whether it’s down to the subject its self or the lighting in the area.

I will continue to look at Vinks’ work for inspiration as his photography continues to inspire and surprise me.

In this image Vink has used natural light with an aperture of f16-22+ Vink has done this so that everyone in the shot in in focus and is also sharp. This image was also shot of black and white film so all the grain can be seen in the shot.

Here in this shot Vink used one of my favorite techniques which is to purposefully obscure part of the image using a subject in the foreground. Doing this creates a frame around the main subject but after your eye is led to the main subject your eyes catch the eyes of the man to the right in the foreground. Giving your subject a lot to look at is something that i love to do as i feel the more the subject has to look at the longer they look at the image giving themselves time to read and understand an image or the series it belongs to.

This is my favorite photography by John Vink as this image is an image i have found myself return to and also an image that has stayed at the front of my mind to use as inspiration during shooting.

I love the way Vink obscured the frame by using the car mirror but also using himself and his camera to frame inside of the mirror. This doesn't only give your eye something pleasing to look at by obsuring the frame but the action in the background of the mirror gives the image a kick. While the framing inside of the mirror gives your eye something to be lead to before exploring the rest of the image.
